Chapter 1 Activity :)

Chapter 1

(1.5) “For all the speeches given, the commercials aired, the mud splattered in any election, a hefty percentage of people decide whom they will vote for only at the last minute.”  Suppose that a sample of people were asked, “When did you finally decide whom to vote for in the presidential election?”  These answers were given:

Answer                                       Percent
Only in the past 3 days                          17%
In the past week                                      8
In the past 2 weeks (after the debates)     18
In early fall (after the convention)             24
Earlier than that                                    33

a.   Would you use a pie chart or a bar chart to graphically describe the data? Why?
Yes, because the given data are in percentage rate. The pie chart is the best
way to graphically describe the percentage data.

b.   Draw the chart you chose in part a.

c.   What does the chart tell you about the reliability of election polls taken early in the election campaign?
The chart tells that many of the sample persons have decided already earlier     than the debates, conventions, and any presidential election activities of whom they will     vote in the presidential election. Which mean that nowadays people are responsible     enough of their right to vote. Few only had chosen their presidential candidate in the     past week. Only mean that many people don’t believe in the advertisements or      campaigns done by the presidential candidates.

  1. Draw a stem and leaf plot for the data.  Describe the shape of the distribution.  Are there any outliers?

            4          8 9 1 8                                    REORDER:  4          1 8 8 9
            5          0 3 3 5 8 3                                                      5          0 3 3 3 5 8
            6          7 8 2 1 0 4 2                                                   6          0 1 2 2 4 7 8
            7          8 1 1                                                               7          1 1 8

The shape of the distribution is skewed right.
            There is no outlier.

  1. Construct a dotplot for the data.  Which of the two graphs is more informative?  Explain.

For me, the dotplot is more informative because it is easy to read than the stem and leaf plot. Dotplot has the advantage of easy to understand the data given. Unlike in          the
stem and plot you need to analyze what would be the left unit.

(1.12) There is an increasing demand among consumers for broadband Internet access, which will increase the speed at which they can access the Internet.  Cable currently leads the broadband market over DSL and up-and-coming satellite access, and it is predicted that cable will continue to dominate the U.S. residential broadband market over the next 4 years. 15

  1. Use a pie chart to describe the predicted broadband market in 2005.

  1. Use a bar chart to describe the predicted broadband market in 2005.

  1. Which of the two graphical methods is less susceptible to distortion by the presenter?
For me, the less susceptible to distortion is the bar graph. Bar graph because in pie graph the division of parts is needed. Unlike in the bar graph, it provides a visual presentation of categorical data.  Categorical data is a grouping of data into discrete groups, such as months of the year, age group, shoe sizes, and eye colors. In a column bar chart, the categories appear along the horizontal axis; the height of the bar corresponds to the value of each category.

(1.20) Getting Up to Speed   Small businesses continue to rely on the telephone as their primary communication tool, using the Internet primarily as an information source.  A research survey conducted by Covad/Sprint/Equation Research indicates that most small businesses are only beginning to adopt broadband Internet access.

c.       Are there any outliers in the set?  If so, what sites boast an unusually large number of unique visitors?
YES if you based in the dotplot of the relative frequency of each sites . The sites that boast an unusually large number of unique visitors are Yahoo sites, Time Warner Network and MSN-Microsoft Sites.
